‘Unicorn – The Guard of The Meadows’ is a Fine Art Giclee Print from an original drawing in ink and watercolour.
Printed on matt subtle-textured archival quality acid free (pH neutral) 310 gsm Fine Art Paper paper with archival inks.
Archival pigment inks offer fade-resistance for over 100 years.
The drawing depicts a figure of a red sandstone unicorn holding The City of Edinburgh shield and a flagstaff seated on the top of the pillar.
This unicorn is one of the two placed opposite each other across the road, situated in the West End of Melville Drive. On Edinburgh arms held by unicorn there are letters: NISI DOMINUS / FRUSTRA meaning: Without God (it’s) in Vain
The two unicorns were placed at one of the entrances of the park in 1886 to commemorate the International Exhibition opened by Prince Albert on the 6th of May 1886.
Inspired by wandering around The Meadows, which is a beautiful public park in the South of Edinburgh, that used to contain a loch called the “burgh loch” & also the “South Loch” at a later date. It was subsequently drained and developed into a great spacious green space for everyone to enjoy!
There are 5 statues of Unicorns and 1 – of a Lion around The Meadows.
This fine art print is created based on my original drawing of a view of the unicorn sculpture from Melville Drive in Edinburgh, Scotland.
